The Active Way is a Places For Everyone project, funded by Sustrans. Places for Everyone aims to create safer, more attractive, healthier places, as well as happier lives, by enabling and encouraging people to think about how they travel.

The Active Way project is the first part of a program that will aim to create a network of safe and coherent shared paths and routes that will significantly increase walking, cycling and wheeling in the town whilst linking to surrounding path networks.

As part of this, the project will also create public space that is attractive, more sociable, and feels safer.  The desired outcomes of our project are:

  • Everyday Journeys: Increasing levels of walking, cycling and wheeling for everyday journeys within St Andrews e.g. commuting, school runs, shops and services.
  • Placemaking: Creating good quality public space within St Andrews which prioritise people over vehicular traffic.
  • Connectivity: Improving wider connectivity in and around St Andrews, for example the East Neuk 50, National Cycle Network and local transport hubs.

Put simply, we want to make it easier for active travel on foot, by bike or wheeling. In the process, we would love to see more pleasant and liveable streetscape for people and less parking chaos and pressure from cars.

In turn, this will have a significant and positive impact on the health and wellbeing of our local people. Direct benefits include:

  • Less street-level air pollution
  • Physically fitter adults and children
  • Better mental health for the community as a whole
Our aim is to create Better Path Networks for everyone.

Project Principles

In order to ensure all projects make the largest possible impact, Sustrans has developed the following design principles. Over the coming months The Active Way will invite all members of the St Andrews community to join in discussions around how the project will best serve everyone. • Design places that provide enjoyment, comfort and protection.
  • Ensure access for all and equality of opportunity in public space.
  • Ensure all proposals are developed in a way that is context-specific and evidence-led.
  • Reallocate road space, and restrict motor traffic permeability to prioritise people walking, cycling and wheeling over private motor vehicles.
