We know that projects such as ours come with many questions and we’ve tried to answer as many as we can here. If you find upon reading these that you still have more to ask, please complete our enquiry form on the Contact Us page.
What are the aims of The Active Way project?
The Active Way is an exciting community-led project that aims to better connect the neighbourhoods, pathways and streets of St Andrews.
Coupled with significant opportunities for environmental wellbeing, The Active Way will be shaped by and for the people and communities of the town itself. In turn, this will ensure a positive, unifying programme that signifies meaningful change for the way we live, work and travel.
The desired outcomes are:
Everyday Journeys: Increasing levels of walking, cycling and wheeling for everyday journeys within St Andrews EG commuting, school runs, shops and services.
Placemaking: Creating good quality public space within St Andrews which prioritise people over vehicular traffic.
Improving wider connectivity in and around St Andrews, for example the East Neuk 50, National Cycle Network and local transport hubs.

What exactly are you proposing?
We are proposing to create a high quality network of paths and routes in St Andrews that encourage walking, cycling and wheeling for all users.
Who is being consulted on the proposals?
We will be consulting with as many people within the local community as we can. Due to the current Covid 19 restrictions, we are unable to present our proposals in person within the community, but we are trying to ensure as many people as possible will be able to have their say online and over the phone.
Will spending on cycle paths mean less money for roads?
No, these are entirely separate budgets. Fife Council pays for local roads. This project will be largely funded by additional funds direct from the Scottish Government.
What will be the benefits for local business?
Many studies show that more cycling and walking friendly towns and cities have a higher footfall and benefit local business.
Will I have opportunities to respond throughout the process?
There will be many opportunities to have your say throughout the design phase. There will be detailed discussions with local people regarding where, when and how specific measures will be implemented. This will include using an interactive map and via route workshop exercises as well as further engagement with the community.
What is active travel?
Active travel is making journeys by walking cycling or wheeling. These are usually short, day to day journeys, like walking to the shops, wheeling to work, walking the kids to school, or cycling to appointments.
How much will the project cost?
We don’t know yet because we haven’t developed route proposals. As we progress we will be identifying costs and benefits.
How long will the project take?
We hope that the design process will only take two years for the more straightforward proposals, and that we can start construction in 2023-24.
Where is the money coming from to pay for the works?
The Scottish Government has allocated around 5% of the transport budget for active travel. Much of this project will be eligible for that funding.
We have developed a Project Vision document in consultation with our Community Steering Group. Here’s the current version:
